Update

Where to even begin?!

Bruno and I clearly are terrible bloggers.

Here is what has happened in the past FIVE MONTHS:

  • Not one, not two, but THREE sprint triathlons
  • One half marathon
  • One Ragnar Relay in Pennsylvania

My feet are feeling great. I feel absolutely no pain anywhere, not even my knees as before the surgeries.

Today, I am a triathlete. — Almost exactly one year after my second bunion surgery, I crossed the finish line of my very first sprint triathlon. — 🏊🏼‍♀️400m swim: 9:00 T1: 2:10 🚴🏼‍♀️20k bike: 40:00 T2: 1:23 🏃🏼‍♀️5k run: 28:58 — I performed faster in all three sports than I thought I would. I had estimated my swim at 11 min, my bike at 45 min, and my run at 31-32 min. My transitions were ok but can be improved.. I struggled in T1 to get my left foot to clip on so I pedaled with one foot for a while and couldn't start the bike lap on my Garmin. My next goal is to figure out how to shave off at least five minutes 😏 — @swimbikebruno and I were in the newbie category, and both got first place! It was a sweet surprise. We are in the middle of race season now and I feel very strong. I’ve got my first Olympic triathlon in 3 weeks, and then a 1.2 mile swim across Cayuga Lake in 4 weeks. Then I’ll shift focus to long distances again with a 106 mile bike ride and the Wineglass half marathon to finish the year. Oh and, I gotta squeeze some 5Ks and 10Ks in because I KNOW I can beat my old PRs.

Weeks 1-3 Recap

Well, I am three weeks into training and feeling strong. I’m still motivated this early on, even in the dreary weather!

Because I am training for long distance running plus short triathlons, it’s a bit of a puzzle to fit it all in. I described the basic alternating week format in my last post, but this is how it actually shook out:

January 23 – January 29

  • Swim: 40 min / 1,575 yards
  • Bike: 1 h 29 min / Les Mills RPM + stationary
  • Run: 1 h 34 min / 8.8 miles
  • Strength: 2 h / Les Mills BodyPump + upper body

Let the training begin

Well, here we are. Week 1 of 37. THIRTY-SEVEN.

Bruno and I are going to be training for 8 events this year (he’s doing 9, actually), and the training starts now and won’t end until October. My list is below:

The way we handling this is by focusing on a couple events at once. Bruno created a training plan for me, and right now I’m focused on the Richmond Tri and the Buffalo Half.

Triathlon goals

I don’t have any grandiose goals for my first triathlon, other than to finish gracefully. Time-wise, this is what I am conservatively estimating:

Bunion Surgery – The Aftermath

Hello – it’s been a while!

I got tired of updating you about how I was not doing anything interesting, so I stopped until I was recovered enough to be active.

I am 9 months post-op on my left foot, and 14 months post-op on my right foot. The pictures below show the before and after.

Hello again—2017 here we come!!

It’s been a while folks. A lot of things have happened since the last time I posted:

  • My wife had surgery on her second foot, recovered, and ran her first and second bunion-free 5ks!!
  • I finished my PhD, we both got new jobs and moved to Ithaca, NY. Ithaca is indeed gorges as they say.
  • Due to injury and work overload, I had to cancel my plans to run the Erie marathon in the fall. Instead, I ran a couple of half marathons and some 5ks. I PRed in both distances and I won my first race (sure, it was only 70 people running it and everybody was hangover from new year’s celebrations, but I am still counting it and crossing it off my bucket list).
  • Our cats are adorable as usual.

Day 11: Hung over.

After the first couple of days, the pain of surgery starts to go away. This is mostly due to the heavy dosages of pain killers, but I pay close attention to my pain levels before and after taking  a pill to know if the dose can be reduced. I do not like to take these painkillers so I try to get off them as quickly as possible.

Immediately after surgery, I was taking the following:

  • 5mg Oxycodone HCL every 3 hours = 8 pills a day
  • 500mg Cephalexin (Antibiotic) every 6 hours = 4 pills a day
  • 10mg Oxycodone HCL ER every 12 hours = 2 pills a day

After almost one week, I started to reduce as follows:

  • May 2 – reduce 5mg Oxycodone to 6 pills a day
  • May 4 – reduce 5mg Oxycodone to 4 pills a day
  • May 7 – reduce 5mg Oxycodone to 2 pills a day

The antibiotics run out today (you take 40 pills until they are gone), so by tonight I will be taking:

  • 5mg Oxycodone HCL every 12 hours = 2 pills a day
  • 10mg Oxycodone HCL ER every 12 hours = 2 pills a day

So, in about 5 day’s time, I went from 12 pills a day to 4, and this has effects on my body. It feels exactly like being hung over: headache, light sensitivity, slightly irritable, nausea. Because of that, getting off the painkillers is the second worst hurdle to overcome in recovery (the first is making it past day 2).

It’s a hurdle not just because of the hangover, but also because since you’re off the meds you aren’t sleeping as much, so you are immobile and awake, which leads to boredom, backaches, frustration, desperation, etc. I would say this is the time when most people question whether it was the right thing to do. Despite feeling miserable, I say this with certainty: yes, this surgery was the absolute right thing to do.

I will stick to 4 painkillers a day until Monday (May 9), and then go down to 2 until Wednesday (May 11). My goal is to be completely off the painkillers by late Wednesday/early Thursday.

Wish me luck as I push through this uncomfortable phase! Once I’m on the other side, it should be smooth sailing. ⛵️
